As she was living and working in Shanghai, a huge urban metropolis of 24 million people, Monika Cicolella decided to express her deep attachment to trees and her lack of Nature in the series Energy of Spring, a series full of coloured blooming trees, swinging between idealism and abstraction. Taking inspiration from the vivid colours of Chinese traditional crafts (ceramics, ethnic minorities' embroideries, Chinese emperors' clothing) as well as from the flashy irreverence of Western Pop Art, she shakes up the austerity of classic Chinese ink painting and makes it pulsate with energy.
"I like spring because this is the time of the year when every human can reconnect both with Nature and his own true nature", Monika Cicolella explains. "I believe that trees can be a source of energy for each of us. I wanted to represent and transmit this energy that they give to us".
